UNITED KINGDOM - JANUARY 04: Nudists gathered at the fireside, 1938. A photograph of nudists gathered at the fireside, taken by Saidman for the Daily Herald newspaper on 1 May, 1938. These 11 members of the National Sun and Air Association are attending their annual conference at Friern Park in North Finchley, London. Several of the men smoke cigarettes or pipes. Influenced by German ideas on health, the naturist movement began to develop in England in the 1920s. The National Sun and Air Association grew out of meetings held in a Hendon pub. By 1937, the association had a membership of 2,350. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers. (Photo by Daily Herald Archive/SSPL/Getty Images)
