Uruguayan writer Mario Benedetti poses at his home in Montevideo on January 7th, 2007. Born in 1920, Benedetti has written tales, poems, essays, theatre and novels and is one of Latin America's best known writers. The Argentine film based on his novel "La Tregua" (The Truce) was nominated for an Oscar in 1974 for Best Foreign Language Film, while singers such as Spanish Joan Manuel Serrat and Uruguayan Daniel Viglietti have sung his poems.
