NEW YORK - OCTOBER 1:  A worker helps complete construction of the new memorial at the African Burial Ground National Monument October 1, 2007 in New York City. Approximately 15,000 free and enslaved Africans from the 1690s until the 1790s were buried in a 6.6 acre burial ground in Lower Manhattan. The remains of 419 Africans were discovered at the site in 1991 during construction of the Foley Square federal building. The formal dedication of the memorial is October 5.
