London, United Kingdom: A woman carries her shopping at the Osterley branch of Tesco in London, 03 October 2006. British supermarket giant Tesco revealed Tuesday that net profit rose by almost a quarter during the first half of its financial year as the country's biggest retailer attracted more customers. Tesco said that net profit rose 22.9 percent to 788 million pounds (1.167 billion euros, 1.489 billion dollars) during the six months to August 26, compared with the same period a year earlier. Group revenue jumped 20.8 percent to 20.735 billion pounds. Pre-tax profit climbed 19.7 percent to 1.092 billion pounds, helped by the sale of property owned by Tesco.
