Austrian police said 24 August that a young woman found wandering aimlessly in a Vienna suburb had been identified as the kidnapped girl. The woman identified herself as Natascha Kampusch, whose abduction in 1998 while she was on the way to school provoked national anguish and one of the most intensive police investigations in Austrian history.
