RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - JUNE 08: A gardener trims in front of a home in a deforested section of the Atlantic Forest, on June 8, 2017 in Seropedica, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Government data show deforestation increased 58 percent in the Atlantic Forest last year, The forest originally covered an area approximately twice as large as Texas, 330 million acres, but at least 85 percent of the forest has since been cleared by human activity. The forest holds 20,000 species of plants and 2,200 species of vertebrates. The remaining pieces of the forest are threatened by illegal logging and suburban development. Deforestation is a significant contributor to climate change. U.S. President Donald Trump announced June 1 that he will withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement on climate change.
