In this photo, taken on May 9, 2017, 20 year old student Chau Ho-oi, who works with pro-democracy party Demosisto, holds a board upon which she wrote Chinese characters to sum up her Hong Kong, or her hopes for the city over the next 20 years. Chau Ho-oi, posing at a playground wrote 'To hold onto'. Divided by age, wealth and politics, the people of Hong Kong will mark the 20th anniversary of its transfer from Britain back to China with contrasting emotions: anger and pessimism, pride and celebration. The semi-autonomous city still enjoys freedoms unseen on the mainland. But in recent years there has been increasing unrest, with massive rallies for democratic reform and the emergence of an independence movement in the face of a meddling Beijing. / AFP PHOTO / Anthony WALLACE / TO GO WITH: Hong Kong-China-Britain-politics-social-culture-people by Elaine YU, Aaron TAM (Photo credit should read ANTHONY WALLACE/AFP/Getty Images)
