The "El Niño" weather phenomenon caused heavy seasonal rains since the beginning of the year, leading to overflowing rivers, flash floods and mudslides in most of the northern coastal region of Peru, and leaving 106 people dead and more than 210,000 homes damaged. In addition, the floods destroyed drinking water infrastructure and thousands of hectares of crops, as well as hundreds of kilometers of roads and bridges. / AFP PHOTO / CRIS BOURONCLE (Photo credit should read CRIS BOURONCLE/AFP/Getty Images)
