The tourism industry is hoping that 2017 will herald a renewal of tourists to the scenic region after last year's civil unrest drove both domestic and foreign tourists out of the valley. More than 90 civilians have been killed and thousands injured during the latest protests against Indian rule, sparked by the killing on July 8, 2016, of a popular rebel leader of Hizbul Mujahideen during a gunfight with Indian soldiers.
