SANTA FE, NM - FEBRUARY 1, 2017: A bronze statue of Army staff sergeant Leroy Petry stands in a park in Santa Fe, New Mexico. SFC Petry was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism by President Barrack Obama on July 12, 2011. According to an Army citation SFC Petry 'distinguised himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty' while serving with the Army Rangers in Afghanistan in 2008. His heroic actions, which saved the lives of fellow Rangers, resulted in the loss of his right hand when he deflected a hand grenade thrown by an enemy combatant.
