Abir Moussa, a volunteer with the Syrian Civil Defence, known as the White Helmets, poses for a picture next to the group's vehicle in the rebel-held city of Daraa, in southwestern Syria, on October 23, 2016.
Abir started volunteering with the white helmets a year and a half ago after she witnessed her husband bleed to death following an injury caused by a reported Syrian government air strike. After attending a couple of first aid courses Abir began to join her male colleagues on rescue missions in search for survivors and providing medical aid to the injured. / AFP / MOHAMAD ABAZEED (Photo credit should read MOHAMAD ABAZEED/AFP/Getty Images)
