Corporal Desmond T. Doss, Lynchburg, VA, a conscientious objector, with his wife after ceremonies in the White House gardens during which he and fourteen other servicemen were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Corporal Doss earned the citation while serving with the 77th Division on Okinawa as a medical corpsman.
