Palestinian men rest outside the al-Aqsa Mosque, considered the third holiest site for Muslims after Mecca and Medina, in a very hot summer day in Jerusalem's Old City during the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan on June 21, 2016.
More than a billion people around the world are marking Ramadan this month, when Muslim faithful abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn to dusk. Determined by the lunar hijri calendar, which has 11 days fewer than the solar Gregorian calendar, Ramadan shifts back every year. For the first time since 1983, in 2016 it falls at the same time as the longest days of the year.
