Almost one million people visit Medjugorje each year, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to six young villagers for the first time on June 24, 1981. For 30 years, the alleged phenomenon was ignored by Roman Catholic authorities until 2010, when Pope Benedict XVI issued an order to form an investigation team to search for the truth in case of Medjugorje sightings.
