BOSTON, :  This 12 December 1997 file photo shows Boston Red Sox ace pitcher Pedro Martinez addressing a press conference in Boston after the club signed him for a record 75-million-USD six-year contract which made him then, the highest paid baseball player in Major League. The 28-year-old Dominican right-hander won the 1999 American League Cy Young Award 16 November 1999 to become the third pitcher in Major League history to win a Cy Young in both American and National Leagues. Martinez, who had won the prestigious award in 1997 with the Montreal Expos before being traded to the Red Sox, led the American League this year in wins(23-4), ERA(2.07) and strikeouts(311).
