South Africa's former President Nelson Mandela (L) leaving his office in Johannesburg with Mandela Rhodes Foundation spokeswoman Zelda la Grange after meeting some of the 23 post-graduate students of the 2008 Mandela Rhodes Scholars, who paid him a visit before his 90th birthday later this year. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of high academic merit and leadership potential. The purpose of the scholarship is to build sorely needed leadership excellence in Africa. The 23 post-graduate students are drawn from across Africa, though currently largely from South Africa, and are in a wide range of academic fields at tertiary institutions across the country.
