George Bernard Shaw, Irish dramatist, critic and Fabian, 1893. The author of such well known works as Pygmalion and Saint Joan, Shaw (1856-1950) was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925. A committed socialist, he also wrote numerous pamphlets on social and political issues, many of them published by the Fabian Society.
