LAMPEDUSA, ITALY - SEPTEMBER 12: At a remote migrant center on September 12, 2014 in Lampedusa, Italy. This is also the site where American soldiers were based during the bombing of Libya (1986) in response to Libya's then-continued support of international terrorism. Today, just outside the barbed wire compound, there still remains a sophisticated and off-limits Italian military communications post. Before this base was closed and abandoned, it was here that tens of thousands of African migrants had asylum requests processed while being detained between 1998 to 2007. In this picture, former migrant clothing is still entwined in the barbed wire surrounding the now empty buildings. (Photo by Giles Clarke/Getty Images)
