MOEDLAREUTH, GERMANY - AUGUST 11: A guard tower along a still-standing section of the wall that once divided East and West Germany during the Cold War is seen on August 11, 2014 in Moedlareuth, Germany. East German authorities began fortifying the border between capitalist West Germany and communist East Germany in 1952 in order to prevent East Germans from fleeing west, and in 1961 began construction of the infamous Berlin Wall around West Berlin, which stood as an island under Allied occupation within East Germany. The border fortifications ran right through the middle of tiny Moedlareuth, population 50, and included self-triggering traps intended to kill anyone trying to breach the border. A total of 852 people died trying to escape across the 1,400km-long border from East Germany into West Germany. This year is the 25th anniversary of the 1989 fall of the Wall, when East German leaders relinquished political control and opened the border, and Germany will commemorate the event in November.
