PINE RIDGE, SD - 16 MARCH 1973: Native Indian women demonstrate on March 16, 1973, in Pine Ridge, SD where roughly 200 American Indians occupy the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, for the rights of indigenous people. The town of Wounded Knee, the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre, was seized on February 27, 1973, by followers of the American Indian Movement (AIM), who staged a 71-day occupation of the area.
