The charity 'SALAM' was formed in 2002 following the French Government's closure of the Red Cross centre in Sangatte, to help support the large migrant community in northern France. In addition to their nightly supply of hot food, the charity also offer clothes, medication, legal assistance and protection from discrimination. SALAM is supported by over 300 volunteers who assist migrants with a broad range of nationalities, from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Kurdistan, Iraq, Eritrea, Sudan, Palestine, and Somalia.
