On public display for the first time since 1969, the Black Star of Queensland will be unveiled to the public at the opening and dedication of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal on June 2, 2007. On display from June 2 until December 2, the Black Star of Queensland is among the largest known black sapphire's in the world. The 733 carat six-point star sapphire is rimmed with 35 diamonds. The uncut sapphire was found by a boy named Roy Spencer in the 1930's. It is rumoured that the boys family used the original 1156 carat stone as a doorstop in their Queensland home. The gem was later sold in 1947 to noted jeweller Harry Kazanjian in the United States before being on loan to the Smothsonian. (Photo by Lucas Oleniuk/Toronto Star via Getty Images)
