About 86 sixth-graders arrived Monday at the new West Denver Preparatory middle school at the remodeled Lake Middle School in northwest Denver. Mayte Armendariz, 10, works on a writing exercise with the rest of her classmates in the CU (for the University of Colorado) classroom. The charter school organization also is opening another school in northwest Denver at another campus with approximately 109 students. The two new schools were a focus of an intense battle last fall, with community members fearing the opening of two charter schools so close to each other would draw students from traditional middle schools. West Denver Prep has typically been one of the highest performers on thestate's annual exam, the Colorado Student Assessment Program. Today (Tuesday, Aug. 10), the state releases the results of the 2010 CSAP, the growth scores and the ACT scores. Check back with www.denverpost.com at 10 a.m. to find your school's scores.
