A fish vendor sells juvenile yellow fin tuna at Manila's Farmers market on November 11, 2011. Environmental watch dog Greenpeace is calling on the Philippine government to join neighbouring Pacific Island coastal states in supporting the extension of the ban on fishing in the Pacific Commons and on purse seine fishing using Fish Aggregating Devises (FADs), which worsen tuna overfishing and cause wasteful by catch of other threatened species and juvenile tuna. Greenpeace recommends transforming the Philippines' fishing industry to pole and line, hand line, and free school purse seine fishing, in order to be able to meet the increasing market demand for sustainably caught tuna products and set the example for the rest of the world in ensuring the long-term sustainability and profitability of our fisheries.
