On a bright warm August afternoon more than 50,000 people came to watch the match, even though it clashed with the Olympic Games at the White City Stadium nearby. Manchester United's goalscorers were George Wall and Jimmy Turnbull, who scored a hat-trick. This was the first year that the FA Charity Shield was competed for, replacing the Sheriff of London Shield match.
