Japan's biggest automaker, Toyota Motor Corp. announced August 7, 2002 that profits more than doubled for the latest quarter on strong sales that defied fears about the slowing pace of U.S. economic recovery. Toyota earned 352 billion yen ($2.9 billion) for the three months ended in June compared to 162 billion yen a year ago. Its overseas sales rose 28 percent to 1 million vehicles for the quarter, much of it in North America where the redesigned Camry and Corolla sedans and Tundra light trucks were popular. The automaker, which is reporting its quarterly earnings for the first time, is planning to sell 6.11 million vehicles worldwide for the fiscal year ending in March 2003.
