This sailor leans out of a porthole on the SS Tilapa, docked at Avonmouth Dock, Bristol. SS Tilapa was the first ship to bring bananas into Britain after the Second World War. During the war most foodstuffs were rationed, especialy those brought from overseas. Rationing did not officially end in Britain until 1954. This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs.
