Among the fifteen servicemen awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor at a mass presentation in the White House gardens was Corporal Desmond T. Doss, Lynchburg, VA, shown receiving the Nation’s top award from President Harry S. Truman. Corporal Doss, the only conscientious objector ever to receive the award, earned the citation while serving as medical corpsman with the 77th Division on Okinawa.
