RAFAH, GAZA STRIP - MARCH 7, 1957: More than four months after Israel's first occupation of this war-torn area, a Swedish officer with the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) chats with an Israeli tank crew at they withdraw March 7, 1957 from Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. In late October 1956, shortly before the British and French invasion of the Suez Canal Zone, Israeli troops seized the Egyptian-occupied Gaza Strip and used it as a springboard for its advance against the Egyptians in the Sinai Peninsula.
