ISTANBUL, TURKEY: A Turkish police officer stands 23 September 2004 in front of the Greek Consulate in Istanbul, where demonstrators lefts placards reading 'All governments are killers' (L) in Greek and 'Peace is so important that we cannot leave it to militarism.' Protestors demonstrated against the jailing of the only known Greek soldier to have refused to serve on a warship in the Gulf to protest the US-led war in Iraq. Amnesty International called 22 September 2004 for the immediate release of Giorgos Monastiriotis, 24, who was arrested and sentenced 13 September 2004 to three-and-a-half years in prison after a Greek naval court in Piraeus convicted him of desertion. Monastiriotis, who had signed up for a five-year stint in the Greek navy, refused in May 2003 to follow his unit on the frigate Navarino that was sent to the Gulf as part of the US-led anti-terrorist operation 'Enduring Freedom', which was first launched against terrorist bases in Afghanistan after the 11 September 2001 attacks on the United States.
