TEHRAN, IRAN: Iranians burn a US flag during an anti-US demonstration in Tehran, 13 August 2004. Several thousand Iranians assembled after the weekly Friday prayer, in line with a call by officials angered by more than a week of deadly fighting between US forces and Shiite militiamen in the Iraqi Shiite Muslim holy city of Najaf. "Defend the mausoleum of the imam (Ali) with our blood," "White House, black heart," and "The Muslim nation will never forgive," chanted the protestors. The mausoleum of Imam Ali in the central city of Najaf is one of the holiest sites for Shiites, who also form the majority in Iran.
