John Winthrop, English Puritan settler in America, 17th century (c1880). Winthrop (1587-1649) led a group of Puritan settlers to Massachusetts in 1629, establishing the Massachusetts Bay Colony on the coast between the present day cities of Boston and Salem. Winthrop was elected the colony's governor on 12 occasions between 1630 until his death in 1649.
