Tugce intervened at a McDonald's restaurant in Giessen when two teenaged girls were being accosted by men in the bathroom of the restaurant on November 22. One of the men, Sanel M., reportedly waited for her in the parking lot and punched Tugce so hard that she received brain damage after falling on the pavement. Doctors declared her brain dead and Tugce's parents agreed to her removal from life support systems on November 28, which was Tugce's 23rd birthday.
