1st October 1955: A group of boys play in the shadow of a high voltage electricity pylon in the Scottish industrial town of Kilmarnock. Kilmarnock is home to a variety of industries, including the Johnnie Walker whisky distillery and John Lawson's tartan factory, as well as others less traditional to Scotland such as Saxone shoes and Glenfield and Kenny, manufacturers of high quality hydraulic equipment. It is hoped that the diversity of these enterprises will protect the town's economy in the event of a slump so that the low rate of unemployment, 1.5 per cent of the working population, does not increase.
