16th May 1978: Footballer Ally MacLeod of Motherwell and manager of the Scottish football team. MacLeod resigned from the national side after Scotland's disappointing performance in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. Despite having a highly rated team, including Kenny Dalglish and Archie Gemmill, Scotland lost to Peru and Iran and finished bottom of their group but played well against Holland in their last game and won 3 - 2.
