The Witsand Sustainable Human Settlement project just outside Cape Town in South Africa, 2009. The residents used mbaulas, small fires in a can, to heat and cook, creating serious health problems. Residents organised and built their own houses, with the assistance of PEER Africa, based in the USA. Residents were trained in various building skills and participated in the building. The new houses are environmentally sustainable, facing north to maximize heat and light. They have indoor plumbing. They eliminate the need for indoor bio fuel fires that cause respiratory and environmental problems. (Photo by Susan Winters Cook/Getty Images)
