European Union foreign ministers gave the go-ahead on July 26, 2010 to open membership negotiations with Iceland, but amid growing doubts about public support on the island. Iceland lodged its application on July 16 last year, at the height of a financial crisis that decimated its banking sector, pushing it to seek economic refuge within the EU and ultimately the euro currency.
