RICHMOND, VA - SEPTEMBER 9, 1973: This early crash on lap four of the Capital City 500 NASCAR Cup race blocks the entire track at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway. Dick Brooks’ battered Ford (No. 90) sits sideways as other mangled machines are scattered about. Brooks, Darrell Waltrip, Lennie Pond, J.D. McDuffie, Bill Champion, Dean Dalton, Baxter Price and Richard Brown were all eliminated from the event in the one single incident. Buddy Baker (No. 71) managed to get his Dodge repaired and returned to the track, ultimately finishing in 17th position, 152 laps behind winner Richard Petty.
