ITALY - MARCH 07: . an ancient painting of the the Knights of the Round Table . A mysterious 'sword in the stone' thrust into a rock by a medieval knight would prove that the legend of King Arthur originated in Tuscany, not Brittany. The sword is preserved at the Gothic abbey of St Galgano, now ruined, built to honour a 12th-century Tuscan nobleman who renounced a life of 'lust and violence' to become a hermit. Scientific tests on the sword confirmed it is made of a metal and style 'compatible with the era of St Galgano'. Historian said this story was the origin of the myth of King Arthur.
