REYKJAVIK, ICELAND - OCTOBER 1: Riot police stand guard in front of the Icelandic Parliament house protesting the governments inability to handle the country's ongoing financial crisis on October 1, 2010 in Reykjavik, Iceland. 2000-2500 people demonstrated at the formal start of the parliament. The president, prime minister and Bishop of iceland had to withstand a rain of eggs, bread and keys(representing those who could not pay off their housing loans) whilst riot police surrounded the parlament and threatened the use of tear gas. In 2009 after a series of demonstration the majority of parlament had to step down with call for new elections. People want the goverment to come up with solutions to housing loans that have increased by 30-100% after the financial crash, in addition to taxes being raised, salaries decreasing and growing unemployment. Many families face losing their homes in the coming weeks as the IMF has demanded that the government do not postpone forclosures any further.
